My name is Dr. Amy DeFries and I have a real soft-spot for animals. Having been in private practice for 3 decades, I've learned one of the times that clients lean most heavily on a veterinarian is when they have to make the decision to let their beloved pet go. I have found great satisfaction in helping clients and their pet through this difficult time by showing compassion and empathy. I do believe that, when appropriate, euthanasia is a gift we can give to our pet as the final act of kindness.
I have found that when the time has come for me to say goodbye to one of my animals, the home setting was easier for me and more importantly, much easier for my pet. I believe that pet owners should have the option of allowing their animal to have a peaceful passing in their home. The stress for both the owner and their pet is decreased;
I have found that when the time has come for me to say goodbye to one of my animals, the home setting was easier for me and more importantly, much easier for my pet. I believe that pet owners should have the option of allowing their animal to have a peaceful passing in their home. The stress for both the owner and their pet is decreased; it is private and more comfortable. Additionally, the procedure can be customized and also allows for more family to be present, if desired.
Decisions and needs surrounding pet euthanasia can vary greatly. I offer a personalized plan for this final act of kindness. This includes communication discussing the pet's condition, the actual procedure and aftercare of the remains. I will do my best to make this emotional time easier for the family and the pet. Please contact me with any questions or if you would like to schedule services.
I will discuss with you via phone, Zoom, or if you prefer in person, your wishes and concerns. Based off of your wishes, I will prepare and send you an invoice which will include the aftercare of the remains. We will be able to discuss your pet's condition and what to expect should my services be needed.
Payment is taken before I arrive at your home. The purpose of doing so is to allow my visit to focus solely on your pet and your needs.
Your pet will be given an injectable sedative to allow them to be calm and pain-free for the euthanasia injection. They will become very relaxed typically within 5-10 minutes following the initial injection.
I partner with compassionate facilities to handle cremation or aquamation services for your pet. I am happy to help with the transfer to and from the facility. Some owners opt to handle the transfer themselves. We will discuss your preferences during the initial consultation.

There are several factors to consider. The most basic questions are simply: is your pet having more good days than bad, are they pain free or can the pain at least be controlled with medication, are they eating and drinking normally, are they able to eliminate normally, has a chronic medical problem progressed or no longer responds to medication, are they able to get around, and, do they still want to interact with their family members. If you are struggling to determine what is best, please reach out to me. There is commonly a 'grey-zone' and what might be appropriate for one family may not be so for another. The process of letting a beloved pet go is a very personal one.
